LAMA? למה?

During my Hebrew lessons, I heard my teacher use the word “lama”.  It is a question word and when she translated it, I knew it was a word I had used many times in prayer.  It means, “Why?”.
Although I have agreed not to ask “why?” so often anymore; choosing to accept God’s omnipotence, there are still some personal events in my life that I wonder about but will understand in time.
One is, “Why (lama?) did the Holy Spirit of Yahweh direct me to study the Hebrew language?”
And now, “Lama (why) has He created such an intense attraction for me to learn about the tribes of Judah and lineage of our dear Lord?

Then I remembered where I had heard that word in the Bible.  “And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying:
“Eli (Elia) Eli, LAMA sabachthani?”  that is to say.  “My God, My God, why (lama) hast Thou forsaken Me?”
(Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34).

FORSAKEN?

Have you not felt the same way many times?  I have.  When we hear this cry of Jesus, we know He felt what we so often feel…forsaken.  Yet, His anguish was multiplied to the extent of the number of people in all the world.

LAMA?

Here we have the high cost to Christ of His atonement for our sins.   He was accursed of God as our sin-bearer and suffered the agony of spiritual death for us.
For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.  (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangeth on a tree:

That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.  (Galatians 3:13-14).

LAMA?

He cried with a loud voice, as a shout of triumph and yielded up His Spirit.  In other words, having borne the wrath of God’s judgment against sin, He knew He had triumphed over Satan and the curse of sin.

LAMA?

Why?  For you and me.  Praise God!

PRAYER

So, how much did it hurt, Lord, when You cried “Lama?”.  When You felt forsaken by God for us?  Thanks for reminding us…that because of Your Great Love for us, you were even willing to be forsaken by Your Father…so that we would never have to feel the pain to the extent that You did.  That we could be assured that no matter how we feel when we cry out, “Lord, why (lama) have You forsaken us?”, we know that He has not and never will because of what You did for us.  We love you Lord.  Now, we know LAMA.
